Kamakura

Overview

Explore Kamakura during your
Japan trip

Once the seat of Japan’s first shogunate, Kamakura blends historical grandeur with laid-back coastal charm. This seaside town, nestled just south of Tokyo, is home to towering Buddha statues, ancient Zen temples, and scenic hiking trails that weave through forested hills and ocean vistas. It offers a perfect day-trip escape where past and present coexist.

Stroll down Komachi Street for traditional snacks and souvenirs, visit the iconic Great Buddha (Kamakura Daibutsu), or explore Hasedera Temple with its sweeping coastal views and tranquil gardens. History buffs will love the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, a spiritual center since the samurai era, while nature lovers can hike the Daibutsu Trail or enjoy the beachside breeze at Yuigahama. Kamakura’s relaxed pace, spiritual atmosphere, and cultural richness make it a must-see for those seeking a deeper side of Japan.
